About ADST
The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST)
is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1986. Located in an historic
Sears-style cottage (below) at the State Department's George P. Shultz National
Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC, shown at left) in Arlington, Virginia,
ADST advances understanding of American diplomacy and supports training
of foreign affairs personnel at the NFATC's Foreign Service Institute (FSI)
through a variety of programs and activities. This close collaboration
results in a special public-private relationship between FSI and ADST.
The Association accomplishes its objectives by:
- Creating the
Foreign Affairs Oral History Collection. Growing by some 80
histories per year, the collection conveys the experiences, analyses,
knowledge, and wisdom of both career and noncareer foreign affairs practitioners.
Users include business, the media, academe, and government. Some 900
oral histories are already accessible to the public on CD-ROM, and approximately
500 more are in various stages of completion.
- Producing a
book series on diplomats and diplomacy, and providing advice
on publishing to serving and former foreign affairs personnel. Sixteen
books have been published in the series with four more forthcoming in
2002. There are six other related titles available.
- Supporting Foreign Service
Institute training programs as well as seminars and policy
conferences that bring together academics, the private sector, and senior
government officials in discussions of critical foreign relations issues.
- Recognizing excellence
in foreign language training through annual awards to Foreign
Service Institute instructors.
- Developing and presenting exhibits
that illuminate the history of American diplomacy and displaying
diplomatic artifacts.
- Sponsoring distinguished ADST
Senior Fellows to pursue special projects on diplomacy.
- Maintaining a research center.
The Association is a nonprofit organization eligible to receive contributions
deductible for federal income tax purposes under Section 501(c)(3) of
the Internal Revenue Code.
