United States Institute of Peace Projects
In addition to its regular oral history program, ADST has collaborated closely with the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) on several special oral history projects pertaining to contemporary events.
The first, known as the Iraq Experience Project, consisted of 113 interviews with American diplomatic and military personnel who served in Iraq between 2003 and 2005. Drawing on these histories, USIP produced three reports on Governance, Economic Reconstruction, and Public Security designed to help personnel newly assigned to Iraq.
Afghanistan Experience Project
Following this effort, ADST conducted similar interviews of diplomatic and military personnel serving at Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan for USIP’s Afghanistan Experience Project. USIP distilled these interviews into a 2005 report on the PRTs’ experiences.
In 2007, ADST completed an oral history for USIP’s Sudan Experience Project on the negotiation and implementation of the Comprehensive Peace agreement on Southern Sudan that was signed in January 2005. ADST conducted 90 interviews of diplomats, negotiators, NGO officials, academics, and representatives of the Sudanese diaspora in Washington. USIP in turn used these interviews to prepare a lessons-learned report, Some Assembly Required: Sudan’s Copmprehensive Peace Agreement.
Iraq Provincial Reconstruction Teams
In 2009, ADST completed an oral history project on PRTs in Iraq, interviewing more than 70 PRT members and others associated with the teams.
